The culmination of the McMullens “Summer” League.

The climax of the McMullens League turned out to be a real nail-biter with the Plough of Crews Hill, Enfield vying for top spot with the Towers of South Weald, Brentwood.
The two teams had postponed games and met on two consecutive weeks to decide the outcome. After the first rubber at the Towers, the Plough came away having won three of the four games and led the field by just one point.
The showdown came on Wednesday the 17th August and proved to be a typical English August evening, cool and wet. Fortunately, the rain stopped soon after the action started and, in any case, the tarmac base of the terrain was not unduly affected by having its dust settled.
Towers had called in their team from as far afield as sunny Wroxham in Norfolk, (Fred looked sorry that he was still in shorts) Brentwood and Kent.
The two triples games were lengthy and hotly disputed, with good shooting and pointing from both sides, but the Plough just shaded them both to give them a three point lead overall.
With three Doubles games to be played the wire was stretched taut. There was everything to play for and there were long discussions about the tactical makeup of the teams before play recommenced.
Once again, the quality of play was excellent, but the Plough managed to get two of those three games to achieve their goal, to be the 2011 McMullens League Champions.
Both teams are to be congratulated on their skill and particularly sportsmanship, in this encounter.

Thanks go, first, to the Plough guv’nr for all his help in providing the terrain, his warm welcome and his sumptuous spread after each League game.
Thanks also go to all of the teams who completed the season and who made the competition such a resounding success.
