ECR Doubles and over 50's, Hanbury Sunday 6th August
Report by Andy Wilmot
A pretty good turnout at the Gardens of Hanbury.
We had 12 teams in this year's competition plus the bonus of a nice day compared to the rain we had the previous weekend at the Festival.
Teams were split into three groups of four with the top two from each group going through to the main competition along with the two best placed thirds. The remaining four teams would play off in a plate competition.
Following the group stage games, Hanbury's own Chris Wilmot and Francois Bourquin along with the two Pauls, Daisley and McNeill were unbeaten in their respective groups. So they were hotly fancied to meet in the final, when they found themselves on separate sides of the knockout draw.
However, having both made it through to the semi finals, both teams lost out, leaving Ian and Carol Barnes to play Mike Brown and Frank Britt in the final.
Meantime in the plate competition, Wethersfield's Terry Whitting and Kim Speed met Ian Butcher and Paul O'Connor from Campetanque in the final, with Ian and Paul running out the eventual winners, 13-6.
In the main competition meanwhile, our congratulations go to Frank Britt and Mike Brown winning the main final 13-6 to become this year's Regional doubles champion.
Both Frank and Mike, and the runners up Ian and Carol both elected to represent the region in the over-50s Champion of Champion's doubles at The Gardens of Hanbury in September.
This means that the losing semi-finalists, Chris Wilmot and Francois Bourquin along with Paul Daisley and Paul McNeill will represent the region at the champion of Champion's doubles at Oxshott in October.
I know that our president and the committee along with all of the region wish these teams every success.
