ECR Doubles
The Eastern Counties Regional Doubles tournament took place at Rayne
Swan and the winners were the Colne Angel pairing of Simon Bird & Sofiane Lachani.
Bird & Lachani took the tournament by storm, remaining unbeaten throughout the day. Topping their
morning group competition they then faced Trevor Blows (Onley, Stisted) & Lorne Gibson (Rayne Swan)
in the quarter finals whom they defeated 13-9. They then met last years EPA doubles champions Keith
Flack & Dean Little, who had earlier defeated Adam Buxton & Vince Schofield (Rayne Swan) 13-8. In
a game which was much closer than the scoreline suggests, Bird & Lachani won 13-6.
In the bottom half of the draw, Chris Allen & Vanessa Webb defeated Viv & Colin Sams 13-0, then Peter
Way & Eric Taylor (Towers PC) 13-8 to reach the final. The exciting expectations of watching two of the
top pairings in the country were sadly dashed when Bird & Lachani steamrollered their way to a very
quick 13-0 win.
In the Plate competition it was an all ladies final with Kim Lachani & Julie Constable (Colne Angel)
taking the honours.
In a very enjoyable and competitive final which saw some excellent play by both teams, Lachani &
Constable ran out 13-8 winners over Beryl Gibson (Rayne Swan) & Tracey Austin (Onley). Gibson &
Austin started the game well and took an 8-4 lead with Austin’s accurate pointing leading the way
backed up by Gibson’s shooting, which is not usually a strong part of her game.
Not to be outdone, the Colne pair changed roles and it worked a treat. Constable pulled off some
excellent shots to get the Colne pair back into the game at 8all. Despite the oppositions fighting
efforts they were just undone at every end and Lachani & Constable took the game 13-8.
