John Cartwright Memorial Doubles, Towers PC 14th August

The second John Cartwright Memorial Doubles took place at the Towers Petanque Club, South Weald in memory of the past president of the Club.
Three games were played before lunch, followed by two more to establish the top four teams.
On completion the results revealed that two teams had won all their 5 games, that of the current holders Keith Flack and Dean Little and Geoff Booth and Simon Doble. Making up the 3rd and 4th positions with 3 wins each, were Victorians 2 (Simon & Sam Mellen) and Towers 3 (Graham Penn and Colin Roper).

These teams were then drawn into their respective semi-finals and there were no surprises as both the holders Flack and Little (Towers) and Booth (Towers) and Doble (Chiltern) marched into the final.

By now it was quite late in the afternoon, but the weather held, which made the final and play off for 3rd and 4th place more interesting to watch for the spectators.
Both matches were keenly fought. The main soon got into its stride with Flack and Little establishing a lead of 8-2, but they failed to press home their advantage, allowing Booth and Doble back into the game and they eventually ran out 13-11 winners to take the JC Shield from the reigning champions.
At the same time, the match between father and son Simon and Sam Mellen (Victorians) and Penn and Roper (Towers), was more even, with the score at 6-6 after 9 ends. Victorians then got the breaks, going 10-6 up but the Towers pair dug in to close the gap. Despite the comeback the Mellens held on to win 13-9 and claim 3rd place.
