John Cartwright Memorial Doubles, Towers PC 15th August 2010
There was a full turnout for the John Cartwright Memorial
Doubles at the 'Tower Arms Petanque Club' South Weald, John was a life long member and chairman
of the club and is sorely missed by all who new him.
The morning session was made up of 4 leagues, with the top 2 teams from each qualifying for the main
competition and the rest entering the plate. In the afternoon it was straight knockout during
which some teams suffered contrasting results. The only team untroubled, scoring comfortably
and unbeaten on the day, were the overall winners, 'Towers' pairing Keith Flack and Dean Little,
securing what was a fitting and emotional victory of 13-1 in the final.
The day continued in
what turned out to be a clean sweep for the 'Towers' petanque club. Current president Peter Way
and Gus Garland won the plate in an evenly contested match against 'Victorians' pair Brenda Wilmot
and Iris Sutton 13-11.
In the consolage 'Towers' stalwarts Bob Lawrence and Kevin Ambrose
overcame fellow 'Towers' veterans Lionel Alcorn and Derek Gutteridge in what was a fitting end to
the competition.
The day was attended by players old and new with John’s wife Patricia and son
Robert presenting the prizes.
