BDPL Triples at Rayne Swan PC 9th May
The Onley Arms, Stisted are the Daniel Robinson and Sons Braintree
League Triple champions for 2010. Despite the low turnout it was a good competition with some closely
matched teams competing for the title. The Onley Arms triple of Tracey Austin, Daniel and Trevor Blows
started well with a 13-7 win over Feering Sun. The game was close but the Onley pointing proved the
difference between the teams.
A good overall performance gave the Onley a 13-5 win over Rayne Swan. In their next game, the Onley
fell 6-0 behind to Lizzy Bollington (from sponsor Daniel Robinson), Beryl and Lorne Gibson (Rayne Swan).
With Lorne Gibson in good form, they extended the lead to 10-4. At the next end, Gibson shot for three
but ended up gifting four to a grateful Onley team. An Onley four took the score to 12-10 but Lizzy
Bollington pointed well to secure a 13-12 win at the next end. In their last game the Onley again
started poorly gifting Feering Bell an early lead. At 5-5 the Bell went 11-7 ahead but Bernie Wade
took out a holding shot to give Onley the impetus to take the game at the next end 13-11. This unlikely
win left the Onley Arms with three wins and a points score of plus 15.
The Rayne Swan team of Colin Sams, Clare Courtney and Wendy Ridehalgh finished in second place also
with three wins but losing out on a points difference of plus 11. In their first game against Feering
Bell they managed to stay ahead throughout to gain a 13-8 win. Against Onley, the Swan could not get
into the game, going 7-0 down. Despite pulling a few points back it was still a convincing 13-5 win
for Onley. Swan’s third game against team mates Lorne and Beryl Gibson and Lizzie Bollington probably
cost them the title. Leading 12-3 they couldn’t get the one point needed to finish the game, letting
the opposition get a vital 7 points on the board before finally taking the game. The Swan’s third win
of the day was against Feering Sun who took third place overall. The Swan took four on the first end
which was surpassed by the Sun who gained a five on the next. Not to be outdone the Swan hit back with
a five of their own. With consistent pointing by Ridehalgh backed up by Sams shooting they went on to
win 13-5 to claim second place.
Feering Sun finished third with two wins. In a close 13-10 encounter with the Gibsons and Bollington,
Lorne Gibson shot well but good pointing by Andrew Winter saw the Sun through to the win. Against the
Bell it was a good team effort from Tom and Andy Winter and Ian Morgans. Bernie Wade from the Bell
switched to pointing and got them back into the game, but to no avail as the Sun ran out 13-5 winners.
Thanks to Daniel Robinson for their continued support and to the Rayne Swan for hosting the competition.
