Ashton & Thorogood Doubles, Sunday 25 October

Report from Keith Flack

There was an unfortunately low turnout for the Ashton & Thorogood doubles this year, with only 6 teams competing. Everyone played each other and after 5 games the top 2 played a final.

After 5 rounds 1 team had 5 wins which was Keith Flack & Dean Little, the 2nd spot was keenly contested between Aris Savvides & Dawn Bourquin and Vic Bradbury & Colin Roper, who incidentally were playing each other in the 5th round. Aris & Dawn had 2 wins & Colin & Vic had 3 going into round 5 so a win was vital for both sides to secure passage to the final.

Eventually Aris & Dawn won the match 13 - 9 meaning each team had 3 wins. After much calculation both teams had identical points difference so a 3 end play off was decided upon.

On the 1st end Aris with his last boule moved the coche from his teams holding position to the opposition giving them 4! The next end saw Colin & Vic pick up 3 meaning Aris & Dawn had no chance of progressing.

So to the final in now fading light, Flack & Dean went into an early lead but were pegged back & overtaken by some excellent pointing by Vic & superb shooting from Colin which saw him hit 3 spot carreaus in one end scoring his team a 5. Flack & Dean pulled together & got the scoreboard ticking in their favour & in a hard fought battle came out 13 -10 victors.
