Venue: Queen Victoria P.H., Coppice Row, Theydon Bois,
Essex. CM16 7ES.
The club meets at the Queen Victoria (inside if wet!) on Saturday mornings from 11.30 am and on
Wednesday evenings (summer league matches permitting) from 7.30 pm.
Anyone interested in petanque is welcome to come and try their hand with us before deciding whether
to become a member.
History
The club was founded in January 1995 with a nucleus of players from a local French language class,
four of whom are still active members. Membership has remained around twenty living locally and
from further afield such as Dunmow, Milton Keynes and Walthamstow. Recently we have welcomed players
from Mauritius who have brought considerable strength and success to our teams.
Club Successes
The club won the National Clubs League in 2003 and had a brief life in the European Clubs Cup
competition in 2004, losing out in the first round to the Dutch team from Uden.
This year the club is again competing in one of three leagues, winning all 13 games against
Marches P.C. and 12/13 games against Ventnor 2 in the I.O.W. The final game against Plough and
Chequers 1 takes place on September 4th at home. Subsequently, winners of the three leagues and a
fourth top scoring club will play off for England Champion Club.
Format and qualification for the European Clubs Cup 2006 has yet to be decided by the BPF.
We have two players of proven international ranking: Patrick Dennis and Dean Little. Patrick has
played in several Grand Prix and other top events; Dean was in the 1997 GB Junior World Championship
team in Geneva and has subsequently played in many major national events.
Leagues
Bob Wilmot organises a McMullen summer league on Wednesday evenings among teams from the brewery pubs
in Essex and Hertfordshire which is now in its eighth year. It is encouraging to see how teams, many
of whom were initially complete novices, have improved over the years. Each pub arranges hospitality
which is an added attraction and has become a secondary competition each week!
Andy Wilmot organises the Herts & Essex League on Sunday mornings during the winter months.
These matches are sometimes combined with other teams in a larger event which allows players to use
their playing time more economically.
