Onley Petanque Club
31st Anniversary (1976 to 2007)
Onley Petanque club 31st Anniversary (1976 to 2007) – the oldest club
in Essex.
The petanque club based at the Onley Arms, Stisted, Essex, celebrates 31 years of continuous activity
in September, making it the oldest club in Essex.
Founded in 1976, the club has had considerable
success in the local Braintree league (BDPL) and represented the Eastern Region at the National finals
on many occasions. Club members have won a number of team competitions over the years and have had a
lot of fun along the way.
Stories from trips to Poole, Nene, Norfolk Square, Avignon and many other
venues still pop up in conversation at club get-togethers.
Three founder members, Rick Norfolk, Barry Haywood and Derek Roughton still play in club competitions
with Derek making a welcome return to the BDPL during 2007. Another stalwart from 1976, June Roughton,
has been back supporting Derek and the club this summer.
On Saturday, September 8th, members old and new will gather at the Onley Arms for a celebration evening
hosted by Club Chairman, Christine Hunt.
On Sunday 9th, the club will hold a pairs competition for
members. Playing numbers have fallen over the past fifteen years but club captain, Trevor Blows, is
encouraged by the increased support of members during the past year to ensure continued activity on
the terrain.
