Onley Petanque Club
Onley Petanque Doubles competition
Club members met on Sunday August 19th for their doubles competition.
Despite a reduced attendance, those that played had an enjoyable afternoon
on a damp terrain.
Each pair took part in a round robin event with the top two contesting the
final.
In the first round, Rick Norfolk and Daniel Blows defeated Trevor Blows and
Christine Hunt 13-7 with some great pointing throughout.
The last of the round robin games saw Daniel joined on the terrain by three
original club members from 1976. He and his partner Rick taking on Derek
Roughton and Barry Hayward.
At the end of the round robin, a last game win by Derek and Barry took them
into the final. They were joined by Trevor and Christine who qualified by a
single point on countback.
The final saw Trevor and Chris take a 9-2 lead with good shooting removing
the opposition from the coche at every end. Sixty years of terrain
experience brought Barry and Derek back into the game. At a single end they
took three with Derek somehow pointing into a head that already had eight
boule within 150mm of the coche. At 10-10 the game was evenly poised. Trevor
shot to open the head, left Chris to point in for two and then took the
match with his second boule.
Landlord Jim Whitwell presented the trophy to
the winners. Christine and Trevor then retired to the bar to buy the
customary round for their fellow competitors and supporters.
We look forward
to the next club event, the Teddington Cup, to be played over the 31st
Anniversary celebration weekend, September 8/9.
