In the Daniel Robinson and Sons Braintree and District Petanque league Feering Bell’s ‘Team Dave’
travelled to Rayne Cock for their League 2 fixture.
Over the past couple of weeks the Bell have been involved in quite a few long and keenly fought
games and this week’s triples was no different. The Cock triple of Ian Humm, Steve Tooley and
Graham Hill built an early lead and managed to maintain this throughout the game, but the Bell
triple of Dave’s Bird, West and Pearse always remained in contention and at 12 – 10 down took
their chance with a 3 to steal a 13 – 12 win.
The doubles and singles were both similar, evenly contested early on then with one side running
away with it. In the doubles West and Pearse led 6 – 5 after a lot of single ends, but a 4 on the
next end for Humm and Hill helped them secure a 13 – 6 win. In the singles Bird and Tooley were
tied at 4 – 4 when Bird took the next 9 points to win 13 – 4 making the match score 2 – 1 to the Bell.
Bocking B were at home to Feering Sun and went down 3-0. Pam Adams, David Mills and Paul Adams lost
the opening triples 13-3 to Russell Bingham, Dick Youngs and Tom Winter. It was a similar fate in the
doubles with Leigh Adams and Mills losing 13-2 against Bingham and Youngs. Paul Adams fought hard in
the singles but still lost out 13-7 to Winter. A good away win for the Sun that moves them into
second place.
An evening of close games at Chequers Black where the home side of Paul Brown, Neil Goodman and
Simon Robinson took the first end before the Onley Arms opened a 6-2 lead including a great
coche ‘shootout’ for four by Trevor Blows. The next six ends saw Chequers bring the score back
to 8-8. The Onley, with Tracey Austin and Daniel Blows finding their range, took three but
Chequers hit back to take a 12-11 lead. The Onley edged one and then took the game 13-12 with a
point at the final end that could have gone either way. In the singles, Robinson and Trevor Blows
had a close nine ends that had Blows taking an early lead with Robinson pointing well to get back
to 7-7. At this stage Blows took the upper hand and over five ends scored the points needed for
a 13-8 win. The doubles followed a similar pattern to the singles. Brown and John Perfect traded
points with Daniel Blows and Austin. At 8-8, the home side took four over two ends to lead 12-8.
The Onley pulled back to 12-11 and had shots for game but Chequers dominated the last end to take
the point for a 13-11 win. A good 2-1 away win for the Onley Arms to keep them in top spot.
In the First Division Rayne Swan 3 stay top after defeating Chequers White from Gt Tey. Keith Flack,
Matt Waldie and Dean Middleton won 13-10 against Lloyd Herman, Frank Britt and Bill Eve after
being 10-3 down. A slight change in direction when throwing the coche started the come back and
the Swan slowly clawed their way back into the game. At 8-10 down the Swan team secured a 4
which turned it in their favour and on the next end got the one point needed for the game.
A comprehensive 13-0 win for Middleton and Harry Waldie against Lloyd and Eve in the doubles,
where Waldie was on fire and put in an excellent pointing performance which the opposition had
no reply to. The singles was completely the ooposite with a very close match between the two
pointing experts Britt and Flack, with Britt coming out on top with a 13-12 win. The game was
even all the way through until at 11-12 to Flack, he played 3 bad boule, leaving the door open
for Britt to point in and secure victory 13-12.
Rayne Swan 4 were at home to Colne Angel and lost the match 2-1. Previously unbeaten in their
triples games the Swan trio of Colin Sans, Clare Courtney and Alan Hopewell spoilt their run by
losing 13-7 to Viv Middleton-Sams, Chris Parr and Daphne Barrow. Sams and Courtney made up for
it with a good 13-2 doubles win over Middleton-Sams and Barrow but Parr was too strong for
Hopewell in the singles winning 13-5.
