It was a busy week for the Onley Arms with two games in three days in the Daniel Robinson and
Sons Braintree and District Petanque League. At Rayne Cock, the Blows family triple
(Trevor and Daniel Blows plus newlywed Nikki Parrish) were always in charge of their game against
Graham Hill, Steve Tooley and Neil Morgan. Good pointing and shooting gave the Onley a comfortable
13-3 win. In the singles, Trevor Blows took an 8-0 lead over Neil Morgan with more good pointing.
Morgan then found his range and clawed back points to 12-8 but Blows took the vital last point.
In the pairs, Daniel Blows and Tracey Austin opened a 5-0 lead. The Cock pair of Ian Humm and Hill
pulled back to 9-9. As with the last few meetings between these teams, the score went to 12-12. At
the final end, Austin pointed in for, what looked the winning shot. Hill moved the coche and his
boule followed through. Blows was unable to beat this and Cock took the game 13-12.
Two nights later and the Onley Arms put in their worst performance of the season. Second placed
Feering Bell, with the three Dave’s playing well, always had the upper hand against Trevor Blows,
Tracey Austin and Nikki Parrish. With Dave Pearse in good shooting form, they won 13-6. In the
singles, Trevor Blows started well and opened an 8-0 lead over Dave West. West took two but Blows
then made three to open an 11-2 lead. At this point, some complacency from the home captain allowed
West to get back to 12-8. However, Blows took the last point for a 13-8 win. The deciding pairs
was close early on but Pearse and Bird pulled away from a lacklustre Austin and Daniel Blows to
win 13-9. The 2-1 win for the Bell keeps them just behind the Onley Arms at the top of the table but
a night best forgotten by the home side.
Feering Sun made amends for last weeks 3-0 defeat with a 2-1 win over Chequers Black. Russell
Bingham, Dick Youngs and Tom Winter started well with a 13-6 triples win over the Great Tey team,
but came unstuck with a crushing 13-0 loss in the doubles. Youngs secured the win for the Sun with
a 13-10 defeat of Simon Robinson in the deciding singles.
In Division 1 Rayne Swan 3 increased their lead at the top after defeating Swan 4 3-0. A poor
pointing display from the opposition saw Keith Flack, Matt Waldie and Dean Middleton to a 13-0
whitewash in the triples, with only Colin Sams showing any form for Swan 4.
Tom Smith improved in the singles and ran Flack close early on before succumbing 13-7. Waldie
consistently pointed on the coche in the doubles which saw Swan 3 move into a convincing lead.
Courtney showed a slight improvement which saw her and Sams gain 8 points before Middleton and
Waldie finished the game off.
Feering Bell 1 continue to fall away after their 4th defeat in a row which sees them drop into
the relegation zone. Carol and Ian Barnes and Bernie Wade lost the opening triples 13-4 to Chris
Parr, Simon Bird and Graham Farmer. The Barnes’ came close in the doubles but still lost out 13-10,
and Wade failed to over come Parr in the singles losing 13-7. The win keeps Colne in second place
3 points behind the leaders.
Rayne Swan 1 move up into 3rd place after defeating Rayne Swan 2 2-1. Lee Dodge, Adam Buxton and
super sub Colin McLeod went 6-0 up in the triples. Dennis Smith, Lorne Gibson and Baz Brewer
fought back well to take an 8-6 lead but eventually lost 13-11.
Brewer won the singles 13-9 despite a good showing by McLeod who had his chances to take the game.
In the doubles, mother & son Beryl & Lorne Gibson took the opening point and that was the end of
their scoring opportunities as Dodge and Buxton scored heavily over the next three ends to win 13-1.
