Feering Bell 2 have been involved in a couple of exciting games this week in the Daniel Robinson & Sons Braintree & District Petanque League.
On Tuesday Dave Bird & Dave Pearse visited Bocking to play David Mills & Malcolm Smith in the doubles K/O. The Bell pair overhauled a 6 - 1 deficit to win the 1st game 13 - 9. Mills & Smith took control in the second with consistently good pointing just missing out on a fanny as they took it 13 - 1 to set up a decider. Maintaining their good form Smith shot to make a 4 in the 1st game of the last end. Bird & Pearse fought back to 6 - 6 but more good play by the Bocking pair took them to the verge of victory when at 12 - 6 up on the ground they were just unfortunate not to point in with their last 2 boule. Bird & Pearse took advantage of their reprieve with good shooting & pointing to take a 5 on the next end to set up a tense finish. On the last end Smith twice pointed in for game on the ground and Pearse twice shot the boule out and pointed with his last to take the game 13 - 12. A really close match played in excellent spirit which either team could have won.

On Wednesday Bell 2 visited the Sun for their League K/O match, which saw another exceptionally close encounter. The Bell triple of Dave Bird, Jack & Dave Pearse took an 8 - 3 lead, but the Sun triple of Ian Morgan, Dick Youngs & Tom Winter dug in & got back into the game and took a 12 - 10 lead. On the last end the Bell shot out the only Sun boule in the head and pointed in to make the 3 needed to win 13 - 12. The highlight of the game was the pointing of junior Jack Pearse, who is in a good run of form at the moment. He mastered the Sun terrain scoring many points and anchored the Bell's game.
Jack took his good form into his singles game with Youngs as they traded points to 7 - 7. Youngs then pulled away and had game on the ground at 12 - 7 with his boule in front of the coche. Jack carreau'd the boule to make 3 and then got back to 12 - 12. On the last end another excellent point from Youngs proved to much for Jack to shoot out as Youngs secured a hard fought 13 - 12 victory.
This set up the doubles as the tie decider with the Sun pair of Morgan & Winter leading 8 - 5. They kept their advantage at 3 over the next few ends to lead 11 - 8, but the Bell pair of Bird & Pearse scored 3 singles to get back to 11 - 11 and shot out the Sun's boule on the last end to make a 2, by the closest of margins to win the game 13 - 11 and the match 2 – 1 but another game that could have gone either way.

Despite an early start at Rayne Cock, the visitors from the Onley Arms did not start playing until they trailed Graham Hills, Ian Humm and Neil Morgan 1-12 after seven ends. At this point, the pointing and shooting of Daniel Blows kept his partners Nikki Blows and Tracey Austin in the game. The trio nibbled away at the Rayne Cock lead and six ends later it was 9-12. At the next end the Onley had shots for game but just managed two before taking the game at the next end 13-12. An excellent win that really hit the Rayne Cock team. This showed in the doubles as Daniel Blows and Austin opened a 9-0 lead before Hills and Steven Tooley put points on the board. With Tracey Austin in good form, the Onley pair wrapped up a 13-3 win. In the singles, Morgan took the first point for the home side but Trevor Blows adapted to the sloping, sandy terrain to build an 11-3 lead. Morgan then took six points from the next five ends to make it 11-9 but Blows broke the sequence to take the game 13-9. An excellent 3-0 scoreline for the Onley Arms to book their place in the next round of the cup.

Elsewhere in the cup Rayne Swan 1 beat Rayne Swan 5, Rayne Swan 2 beat Rayne Swan 4 & Rayne Swan 3 defeated Bocking B. Colne Angel won at home over Chequers White.
