Rayne Swan 3 stay top of the Daniel Robinson and Sons Braintree and District Petanque League
after defeating second placed Colne Angel 2-1.
The home side of Dee Barrow, Julie Constable and Viv Middleton-Sams lost out in the opening triples
to Keith Flack, Dean Middleton and Matt Waldie 13-5. Constable and Simon Bird made amends in the
doubles with the same score-line defeating Middleton and Harry Waldie. It was left to the singles
and Swan’s Flack was untroubled against Middleton-Sams winning 13-4 to take the game 2-1. The
Colne defeat helped Rayne Swan 4 who moved back into second place after a week away, with a
good 2-1 win over Feering Bell 1. The Swan team of Clare Courtney, Colin Sams and Tom Smith
went 9-0 up in the triples and stopped. The Bell team of Bernie Wade, Ian and Carol Barnes
switched their team order and tactics after winning the coche and got right back into the game,
in fact the Swan didn’t win another point losing 13-9 in a great comeback for the Bell. The
doubles between Courtney and Sams and the Barnes’s went in a similar fashion. The Swan pair were
leading 12-3 and just could not gain the vital point needed until the Bell had got right back into
the game at 12-11. Sams shot out Bell’s holding boule and despite her previous good play, Carol
Barnes failed to point in at the crucial moment and Swan won 13-11. Smith won 13-6 against an
out of form Wade in the singles for a 2-1 match win.
Chequers White gained their second win of the season to move up one place into 5th. Frank Britt,
Bill Eve and Lloyd Herman started badly going 11-1 down in the triples after some good shooting
from Rayne Swan 1’s Adam Buxton, backed up by accurate pointing by Lee Dodge. Chequers fought back
well to 8 but were left with too much to do and lost 13-8. The doubles between Herman and Eve for
Chequers and Swan’s Buxton and Dodge was tight over the first few ends with Swan going 5-1 up.
Chequers then fought back with five ends in a row including two 4’s to win the game 13-5. The
singles was very one sided as Vince Schofield struggled to overcome the pitch and Britt used
his home advantage to win 13-1.
In Division 2 a good start for the Onley Arms triple of Tracey Austin, Nikki and Daniel Blows
as they built an early lead. Bocking A, with Malcolm Smith leading the way, came back into the
game as the Onley made some basic errors and gave away points. At 8-9 The Onley took three from
one end as Austin showed her new found shooting ability to go 11-9 up and took two more ends to
wrap up an unconvincing 13-9 win. After a good team talk, the Onley pair of Austin and Daniel Blows
came out and produced a stunning five end 13-0 ‘fanny’. The shell shocked Bocking pair had no
answers to the Onley shooting power. Trevor Blows opened a 4-0 lead over Smith in the singles.
The Bocking skipper rallied to take a couple of points and deserved more for some good pointing.
However, the home skipper led 11-2 thanks to a couple of ‘own goals and missed chances’ from Smith
and eventually won 13-4 to give Onley another 3-0 win to keep them top.
Feering Sun are having a good season so far and another 2-1 win keeps them in the hunt for
promotion. Ian Morgan, Dick Youngs and Tom Winter defeated Graham Hill, Neil Morgan and Steven
Tooley from Rayne Cock 13-9. Morgan and Winter followed this with a 13-4 doubles win. Morgan stopped
the whitewash with a very good 13-1 singles win over Youngs.
Chequers Black visited Feering Bell 2 and in a very close opening triples the Chequers team of
Simon Robinson, John Perfect and Paul Brown were level at 7all against Dave and Jack Pearse and
Dave Bird before moving into a 12-9 lead. The Bell fought back to 12-11 and had a couple of
difficult chances to snatch the game, but the Chequers closed it out 13–11 on the next end.
The doubles was even at 4–4, but excellent pointing by Perfect and Brown making two big scores saw
them to a 13–6 win against Bird and Pearse. The singles saw Jack Pearse continue his impressive
form of the last few weeks, building a 10–5 lead. Robinson upped his game with some very accurate
pointing, but Pearse continued to keep his score moving with some good shooting. At 10–12 down
Robinson pointed close to the coche but Pearse produced a spot carreau with his final boule to take
a well deserved 13–10 victory. Final score 2 -1 to the Chequers.
