In Division 1 of the Daniel Robinson and Sons Braintree and District Petanque League leaders Rayne
Swan 3 stay top after defeating Feering Bell 1.
The night did not start well as the Swan team of Matt Waldie, Keith Flack and Dean Middleton went
down 13-3 in the opening triples, winning just one end against Carol and Ian Barnes and Bernie Wade.
The doubles and singles were a complete reversal in form with comfortable wins in both to secure
the 2-1 win. In the doubles Harry Waldie and Middleton beat the Barnes’ to 5. The foundation of
the win was superb pointing by young Waldie forcing Ian Barnes into shots that he missed end
after end.
After going 2-0 down in the singles, Flack was gifted 2 points when Wade shot his own boule out
and moving the coche to Flacks benefit. Thereafter Flack never looked back and kept the pressure
on by picking up 2's to open a comfortable lead which Wade could not pull back, Flack eventually
winning 13-4 to keep his team unbeaten and top of the table.
Colne Angel moved into second place despite losing 2-1 away to Rayne Swan 1. In a very closely
contested match Vince Schofield, Lee Dodge and Lionel Alcorn defeated Colne’s Simon Bird, Chris
Parr and Dee Barrow 13-11. Schofield and Alcorn repeated the score in the doubles over Parr and
Barrow. In the singles Dodge came very close to making it a 3-0 win after leading 9-4 against
Bird. Despite a good performance by the Swan man, Birds experience came to the fore to win the
game 13-11 and move them above Swan 4 on points difference.
Chequers White defeated Rayne Swan 2 to keep them firmly anchored to the bottom of the table.
Only Lorne Gibson gained any success with a 13-6 win over Frank Britt.
In Division 2 Onley from Stisted stay top but Bocking B made them work hard for their win. Pam,
David and Paul Adams lost out in the opening triples to Tracey Austin, Dan and Nikki Blows.
David and Paul Adams had a fantastic doubles against Austin and D.Blows winning 13 -7. The Bocking
pair went 3-0 up but the Stisted pair drew level, it was level again at 6-6. Bocking B then
gained a 5 taking them to 11-6; Onley scored one more point before Bocking scored 2 for the
deserved win. Trevor Blows ensured the win for Onley with a dominant 13-1 singles win over
David Mills.
Bottom of the table Rayne Swan 5 had a storming 3-0 win over third placed Feering Sun. The Swan’s
Andy Stead played brilliantly, backed up well by Nigel Cook and Sam Newman. The Feering Sun
team of Russell Bingham, Dick Youngs and Tom Winter led 8-2 but with the score at 11-11 Stead
breezed in to take the game 13-11. Although Bingham and Youngs didn’t play badly, Cook and
Newman just did enough to take the doubles 13-11. In the singles Winter was up against the
in form Stead, who put his first boule adjacent to the cosh on about 8 occasions which helped
him to a 13-6 win. Although the win doesn’t move them off the bottom it does put them back in
contention, level on points with Bocking B.
Feering Bell 2 visited Bocking A and the away triple of Dave's Bird, West and Pearse got away
to a good start building a 9 - 1 lead. Bocking's Janet Mills, Dave Robinson and Malcolm Smith
dug in to get some points back but the Bell eventually won 13 - 6. The doubles followed the
same pattern with Bird and Pearse gaining an 8 - 1 lead and eventually overcoming Steve Lloyd
and Trevor Turner. In the singles West was 4 - 0 up, but once Smith got hold of the coche he
played very effectively at a 6m length to score the next 13 points to win 13 - 4. Final
score 2 - 1 to the Bell to keep them comfortably in second place.
