Question 15   Approved boules

I always thought that a set of approved boules was a set of 3 identical boules.
Recently someone said that they could play with a mixture of boules, differing in weight, diameter and pattern as long as they conformed with Article 2a of the Official Rules.
I can't find anything in the rules stating otherwise, can you provide the correct understanding of the rules.

Answer 15

It is true that in past years it was the norm to play with a pair or three boules, depending on whether you were playing triples, singles of pairs, bearing the same makers marks, weights and striations, but more recently, certain players have found that they were better served if they had, for example, one pointing boule with multiple striations and two, plain, shooting boules. (if the set consisted of three, of course.)

There is nothing in the rules which says that you may not mix and match.
As long as they are “approved boules”, you can choose whatever suits you best…………….and as long as you keep the same boules for the duration of the game (and subject to one’s not being broken during the course of a game)
